Just Neighbors welcomes three new board members: Joe Keyes, Julia Bizer, and Liz Hoefer. Joe joined in December, and Julia and Liz joined in February.
A retired Chief Legal Officer at the Association of American Medical Colleges, Joe began his involvement at Just Neighbors as a volunteer attorney, coming into the office twice weekly to meet with clients and follow up on their cases. Joe lives in Arlington with his wife Sally and enjoys spending time with his seven grandchildren. Joe finds it rewarding to volunteer at Just Neighbors because it has what he calls “the whole package” – an important mission, dedicated staff, competent leadership, ready access to support, process and systems in place to assure success, and a pleasant environment in which to work.
Julia is a staff attorney at Karamah, Muslim women lawyers for human rights, located in Washington, DC. Julia interned at Just Neighbors following her first year of law school, and returned again after graduation to volunteer. She also gained legal experience as a legal researcher for Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC), and as an intern at the American Red Cross Virginia Capital Region and Central Virginia Legal Aid Society while in law school at the University of Richmond School of Law. Julia played soccer for the University of Richmond Women’s Soccer Team and dove on the University of Richmond Women’s Swim and Dive Team. Julia looks forward to serving with a new team: the Just Neighbors board.
Liz is has worked in the public and private sectors and has a background in strategic planning and performance measurement. She volunteered at Just Neighbors beginning in 2012, when a new program for youth and young adults resulted in a surge of clients. Other volunteer work has included resettling refugees, teaching ESOL, and advocating for victims of human trafficking.
