Turning a Ceremony into Civic Engagement: Claudia’s First Vote

Our naturalization client, Claudia, was scheduled for a citizenship/oath ceremony on Friday, November 1st, in Fairfax, Virginia. She expected to register to vote at USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) after the ceremony, but registration wasn’t offered. Fortunately, her Just Neighbors attorney, Eva Marie Carney, texted her on Saturday to make sure the oath ceremony went as planned. That’s when Eva learned that Claudia was unsure where — and if — she could register and vote in the upcoming election.

Eva went online and discovered that Saturday, November 2nd, was the very last day for Claudia to register to vote in Virginia, and that she could register near her home in Arlington. With just a few hours to spare, Claudia made her way to the address Eva had texted her, registered to vote, and immediately cast her first votes in the United States. She then sent an emoji-filled text to Eva, confirming that she had exercised her fundamental right as a U.S. citizen to vote!
