Immigration Legal Services

Volunteer and Intern Print
Just Neighbors relies on the time and talents of committed volunteers and interns to provide immigration legal services to the low-income immigrant community.

Volunteers

The organization seeks volunteers to:

  • Provide general administrative and I/T support;
  • Assist clients and staff in preparing documents for immigration applications;
  • Conduct initial intake with clients under the supervision of an attorney;
  • Help with community outreach and monthly clinics; and
  • Translate and interpret.

Volunteers are needed in the office during normal business hours and at Just Neighbors’ clinics. The organization works with all volunteers to find times and duties that suit their schedules and interests. Just Neighbors’ volunteers include students, attorneys, teachers, and senior citizens.

To learn more about volunteering at a clinic, which requires no prior experience, see the “Clinics” link to the left.

When I called Just Neighbors to volunteer, I felt very welcome. Volunteering has given me the opportunity to meet others interested in immigration law and the opportunity to ask questions.
-Melissa Chin, Volunteer

I thought that my first volunteering experience was great! I’ll definitely volunteer again.

Interns

Just Neighbors offers summer and semester internships for college, graduate school and law school students. Interns serve in a variety of capacities that complement their schedules and interests. Interns:

  • Perform initial intake with clients under the supervision of an attorney;
  • Conduct legal research;
  • Assist at clinics;
  • Consult with attorneys to develop case strategies and learn about applicable laws;
  • Help clients and staff complete documents for immigration applications;
  • Attend conferences and workshops on immigration policy and services for immigrants;
  • Translate and interpret; and
  • Prepare marketing and fundraising materials.

Interns may be eligible for academic credit for their work at Just Neighbors. If you are interested in learning more about the organization’s internship program, please contact us.

Interning at Just Neighbors was an invaluable experience. As a Religion and International Studies double major, I was excited to learn about the intersection of these two fields in the mission of Just Neighbors. However, the work I did that summer taught me so much more. The sincere dedication and compassion of the Just Neighbors staff amazed me on a daily basis, overshadowed only by my realization of the complex hardships that immigrants face in the United States. I was truly inspired by both my co-workers and the clients; participating in their commitment to creating a better way of life was my greatest reward that summer.

Summer Intern

There’s a wide range of things to do here, and it’s definitely not just copying and filing. It’s a very small office that does a lot of good work, and is a fantastic experience in non-profit, immigration, and legal work. I’ve been very impressed, and they have a really good set of staff. They’re friendly and honest and experienced in immigration law.

I’ve been doing casework all summer (mainly domestic violence cases, self-petitioning under VAWA, and Temporary Protected Status renewal for Salvadorans) and I’m just a college undergrad. It’s a good chance to learn how both a small non-profit office works, and how to give reliable legal services to clients, immigrants or not. Anyone can volunteer at Just Neighbors – for one day at the monthly clinics, for a few days a week in the office, or even full-time as an intern! There’s always something for someone to do here, and you never feel like you’re wasting your time.
